About our Club

Introduction

East Kilbride Cricket Club, formed in 1962, is an outgoing and friendly Club. The early history of the Club, has been recorded, in what is affectionately known as 'The Book'.

A version of 'The Book'  edited down and dedicated to one of our former players provides an amusing look back at the early life and times of EKCC.   Converted to 'PDF' format, it is available to be downloaded from here.  Download Book

The Cricket Club was a founder section of what is now East Kilbride Sports Club. In addition to our cricket ground, situated in a lovely country park, there are four tennis courts and two rugby pitches.

We field two Saturday teams and also play mid-week cricket. New players are always welcome at all levels of ability and age.

Juniors

The Junior Section has its own committee.  The Club has gained Bronze Award status under Cricket Scotland's 'Accreditation Scheme'. We have a pro-active youth policy, coach in local schools and run evening coaching sessions for children and young adults during the summer.  In the winter we train one night a week at a local school.

We enter teams in local competitions at a number of age ranges.  Check-out our

Junior Section page for details of our Junior set-up.

New young players are welcome to come and try our sport for the first time or to improve their skills with the help of our team of qualified coaches and Team Managers.

The Club was created in 1962.

The photograph shows the attendees at the Inaugural Meeting where the first Club Officials were elected.

In the early days the Club consisted of a group of friends, who got together to play Sunday ‘friendlies’. If the weather was bad  they simply stayed in the Bar.

Season 2008

The abiding memory of the season was looking out onto a lake!  One of the wettest seasons we have had, with only something like 50% of matches completed.

1XI Report Card

We struggled for consistency, perhaps not surprising as opening fixtures against Renfrew, Galloway and Irvine were all cancelled.  It was not to 8th May when the First team took to the field against Glasgow Accies – but that game was abandoned with Accies all out on 152 for 8.

A good win against Renfrew followed by a high scoring wining draw against Partick  and another w/d against Hillhead, appeared to show  we were a team in contention, but then a poor performance against Helensburgh, at the end of May, resulted in an 82 run defeat.

07th June saw another loss with us all out for 86 against Kelburn in 36 overs - a truly shocking batting display.  The next day we chalked up 119 for 1 to overtake Murrayfield’s 118 all out in the first round of the SCU Trophy. The following Saturday, we fell short by 12 runs of St Michael’s modest total of 149, batting again letting us down!

The match against GHK on 21st June was abandoned with us chasing 160 and on 30 for 1 after 5 overs.   On 28th June Galloway blew us away – a staggering 192 run defeat.  The Irvine game the following week was cancelled.

12th July saw us loose a tight game against Accies by 3 wickets.  The next Saturday we destroyed Partick - bowling them out for 73.   Against Hillhead on 26th July we had one of the better games of the year - with all guns firing scoring 257 then bowling the opposition out for 193.

Not a single game was played in August as it never stopped raining!

We could and should have done better.  We felt we had one of the best bowling attacks in the Division but too many batters failed to regularly deliver to their potential.

2nd XI Report Card

Loosing by 9 wickets against Prestwick in the opening game on 27th April and the following week by 75 runs against Kilmarnock was not the start we were looking for.  The Motherwell game on 10th May was abandoned.

On 24th of May we had a cracking game against Moorcroft.  Set to chase 245 we were 241 for 8 when we ran out of overs.  Another classic game followed when the next week saw us score 220 for 5 to loose to Weirs in the 48th over - with them only one wicket in hand.

On 7th June we lost by 91 runs against Cavaliers - chasing their total of 250.  Another big defeat the following week - we lost by 8 wickets against GHK.

The next two Saturdays were blanks with an abandoned game against Active Life, who scored an amazing 414 from 50 overs - then it rained rain instead of 6’s. (Serves them right for not declaring after 25 overs) and a cancelled match against Prestwick.

On 5th July we played a thriller against Kilmarnock chasing down their 226 for 3 (off 38 overs),  by scoring 228 for 2. (Serves them right for declaring)!

A cancelled game against Motherwell on the 12th was followed by a 5 wicket defeat to Whitehaugh the following week – another batting failure.

Moorcroft were next up and a winning draw, when we failed to get their last two wickets with them 44 away from our total of 208.

On 2nd August we defeated Weirs by 2 wickets. All our remaining fixtures were lost to the weather.  Active Life were again the visitors on 24th August and agreed to play in very poor conditions.  We both needed a win – them to win the league - us to avoid relegation.  Scoring 258 for 5 we felt good, but given their previous run fest earlier in the season, far from confident.  In the end they clung on at 191 for 9 – we did not get our win but the winning draw points allowed us to survive relegation by a whisker.

Summing Up

Could and need to do better!

We all agree that while we have an excellent Junior set-up and some young players are thriving in the 'big teams', we need additional senior players to strengthen both 1st and 2nd team squads for the 2009 campaign.
